Noted jurist and Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain on Monday accused the government of clinging to state power through unconstitutional means.
‘Why does the government restrict political parties from holding their public meetings or rallies? Why are the law enforcers firing shots targeting people? Such acts of the government amount to violation of the constitution,” he said. Dr Kamal was addressing a human chain staged in front of the Jatiya Press Club.
The Gonoforum President said, the government violates the constitution by restricting political assemblies and rallies and making the law enforcers trigger-happy ones.
Dr Kamal said, “It’s the results of an undemocratic government using law enforcers against the public as it has failed to the security of public life and property. Renewing his earlier demand, the Gonoforum chief called upon the government to go for a snap election with the participation of all political parties to ‘save the constitution and urged all the pro-liberation forces to build a national unity.
The programme was jointly organised by Gonoforum, JSD (Rab), Nagorik Oikya, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD).
CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim, Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna, JSD president ASM Abdur Rab, ex-Ducsu VP Sultan Mohammad Mansur and BSD general secretary Khalequzzaman, among others, spoke on the occasion.
