Four suspected drug smugglers have been killed in so-called shootouts with police and border guards in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.
They died in separate early morning shootouts in Noyapara of Howaikang Union and Mogpara in Sabrang Union on Friday, amid an on-going crackdown on illegal drugs.
A police team raided Noyapara on Friday morning after hearing about a gunfight taking place between ‘two groups of drug traffickers,’ said Teknaf Police OC Pradeep Kumar Das.
The traffickers fled when the police reached the scene, but two persons were found on the ground with bullet wounds, he said. “Six thousand Yaba pills, two guns and four bullets were recovered”.
The injured were declared dead when taken to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, said the OC.
The dead were- Nazir Ahmed, 40 from Heela Union in Teknaf and Gias Uddin, 40 from Noyapara.
Both of them were in police’s ‘list of drug traffickers’, having been accused in multiple cases, said OC Das.
In a separate incident, two unidentified suspects were killed during when Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) raided Mogpara.
The raid was conducted based on a tip-off about a ‘big consignment of yaba’ coming in from Myanmar on early Friday, said Lt Col Md Asadudzaman Chowdhury, chief of Teknaf-2 Battalion of BGB.
“A number of suspicious looking persons were spotted while arriving from Myanmar. They opened fire at the BGB team, who retaliated with gunfire. Later, two persons were found with injuries.”
They were declared dead at the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, said the BGB official. At least 100,000 Yaba pills and a locally-made gun were recovered from the scene, he added.
