Ministry of Food has started filling of largest pond in Barisal city adjacent to mass killing ground of Liberation War to construct a silo.
Food D epartment officials claimed that permission have been taken from concerned authorities including Environment Department for construction of silo by filling the pond on Kirtankhola River bank.
After visiting the spot it was found that work for constructing side-wall and filling the pond situated on 5.5048 acres of land at ‘Trish Godown’ premises, going on.
Mojibor Rahman, one of the worker at the site, said now they constructing side-wall and after completing that sand-filling of the pond would be started.
Reza Muhammad Mohsin, Barisal district controller of food, claimed that Md. Zahirul Islam, deputy secretary, ministry of food, sending a letter signed on July 26, 2015 ordered for earth filling of the pond to construct steel-silo to be used as central stock depot (CSD) under modern food storage facilities project.
As per that direction we started constructing boundary wall and filling the pond at the cost of Tk 3.5 cores on first phase scheduled to be completed within this year, said Md. Motaleb, technical specialist of the project site, said.
Construction of the silo-complex including a about 3000 square meter silo with capacity for storing 48 thousand food grains, office and staff quarters would be started in second phase, the technical specialist of the project informed.
Sukumar Roy, divisional director of environment, said local food department official sent a letter to DoE about filling the pond and DoE forwarded that letter to head office.
We heard that DoE issued ‘no-objection’ letter for filling the pond on greater public interest and the letter of food ministry directing filling the pond also forwarded to DoE Barisal office, the DoE divisional director said.
