Halda River is the only natural fish breeding famous centre in South Asia . Raozan Upazila administration is regularly conducting raid against the illegal fishing .
On Friday night last , a team of Raozan Upazila administration led by AC(Land) & Executive Magistrate Md. Ehsan Murad conducted raid in Halda river from Sattarghat point to Madunaghat point for about 6 & half hours from 8.30 pm and managed to recover 10 thousand meters of fishing net from the river water . Volunteers of IDF NGO extended cooperation in the raid.
The fishing nets were brought in Upazila complex instantly . While contacted AC (Land) told that these nets will be torched after legal procedures. No one was arrested in the illegal fishing in the prohibited Halda. Halda is the natural breeding centre of curp fishes.
Sources further added that the discharge of industrial effluents into the Halda River is causing depletion of fish stocks. Halda River is vitally important because it is the only place in the country where naturally-laid carp spawn can be collected for hatching. Unfortunately, DoE’s probe has found that a number of industries are directly responsible for polluting the river.
No effective steps have been taken to take the polluters to task. With some 18 canals connected to the Halda River, the pollution has spread and despite being armed with detailed laboratory tests.
Halda River is a river in south-eastern Bangladesh. It originated at the Badnatali Hill Ranges in Ramgarh Upazila in the Chattogram Hill Tracts, flows through Fatikchhari Upazila, Bhujpur Thana, Hathazari Upazila, Raozan Upazila and Chandgaon Thana of the Chattogram Metropolitan City and falls into the Karnaphuli River.
