A devastating fire broke out at Shaheed Suhrwardy Medical College and Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital city on Thursday evening.
However, no causalities were reported in the incident, witnesses said.
Over 1,200 patients of the hospital have been shifted to different hospitals and clinics, they said.
The victim patients and their attendants have expressed a deep sorrow over the fire incident as their sufferings have mounted due to lack of ability to bear extra cost in any new hospitals and clinics.
A total of 16 units of firefighters rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control at 8:30pm , said Shahdat Hossain, Operator of the Control Room of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD).
The fire broke out in the store room at first floor in the new building of the hospital around 5:50pm, the FSCD official said.
The cause of the fire and extent of damage could not be known immediately.
Meanwhile, a three-member probe body has been formed to investigate the incident, according to him.
Many patients at the hospital were being evacuated due to huge smoke created inside the hospital, said Mizanur Rahman, Inspector of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.
Health Minister Zahid Malik visited the spot and directed the authorities concerned to tackle the situation properly.
The FSCD Director General Brig Gen Ali Ahmed Khan claimed that they firemen primarily felt shortage of water that interrupted the drive.
