About 160 shops were burnt to ashes in a devastating fire at Mirpur Jhut (scrap of fabrics from garment industries) Patti in the city yesterday (Wednesday).
Officer-in-charge of Pallabi thana Ziauzzaman said that the fire broke out in the jhut godown at about 2:08pm.
Witnesses told that the jhut patti of Mirpur has about 200 shops. The fire quickly spread and shops were burnt.
An official of Fire Service and Civil Defence told The New Nation, 12 firefighting units rushed to the spot for extinguishing the blaze and they brought the situation under control.
The fire may be sparked by an electrical short circuit. But the reasons behind the fire and its estimated loss could not be ascertained immediately, he added.
