Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday said that female workers who have gone abroad through local agents are mostly tortured in their workplaces.
“It is important to see that how the female migrants are being sent abroad. If any professional recruiting agency sends them to foreign countries, they must be assured that they will be safe there. But if they are sent through any so called ‘agent’ it will be presumed that they might be tortured,” said Kazi Khalikuzzaman, President of Palli Karmo Shahayak Foundation, at a seminar in the National Press club.
He also urged the government to impart proper training to the female workers before sending them abroad.
Shirin Akhter, President of Karmojibi Nari, Rokeya Rafiq, Executive Director, Umme Hasan Jhalmal, Vice-President and Rahela Rabbani, Director of the organisation also spoke at the programme.
The speakers said there are lots of laws in the country to protect women from being tortured, but most of the laws are not applied or not enforced properly.
They asked the government to take more effective measures to protect women from being tortured at home and abroad.
