10 arrested: FBCCI polls held amid clashes

Amid clashes, arrest and baton charge by police, election to country’s apex trade body, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) was held on Saturday.
A good number of supporters were injured in the clash. At 10.00 am in the morning, the clash took place between the supporters of Barrister Zakir Hossain and that of Rabbani Jabbar.
 Chase and counter-chase took place. Police clubbed the rowdy supporters to bring the situation under control and arrested ten people from the spot. FBCCI election board
Chairman Prof Md Ali Ashraf warned the candidates against violating the electoral code of conduct.
 The FBCCI board consists of 52 directors, of which 32 directors are elected directly. The remaining 20 directors are nominated by the country`s different chambers and associations.
Three panels contested the polls under the banner of Swadhinata Byabshayee Parishad led by Monowara Hakim Ali, incumbent first vice-president of the FBCCI, Unnayan Parishad led by Nitol Niloy Group Chairman Abdul Matlub Ahmad, and Byabshayee Oikya Parishad led by Syed Moazzam Hossain, President of Bangladesh Indenting Agents Association.
According to the primary voters list published on March 30, a total of 2,193 voters exercised their franchise. Of them, 430 voters are from 78 chambers and 1,763 voters are from 355 associations.
Like every year, Professor Ali Ashraf MP was appointed the election commissioner to hold this year polls.
However, the elected and nominated directors will elect the president, first vice-president and vice-president from among them for the term 2015-17.
The election for the posts of president and two vice-presidents will be held on May 25 and the result will be announced May 28.
