Dr Md Shairul Mashreque :
We are familiar with favorite city Kolkata previously called Calcutta. It is a lively city with a lot of entertainment.
The city dwellers are found to be very friendly to the Bangladeshi visitors. Its cultural background as the city of Tagore deserves special mention. All talented cultural figures in India are from Kolkata. That is why it is called the cultural capital of India.
The city was constructed and later developed by the British Raj. It once was the capital of India. Later capital was shifted to Delhi.
Calcutta was filled with numerous posh building. Mention may be made of Victoria memorial, Raj Bhaban, Writers Building, the National library. Howrah station. Tradional tram service was introduced by the British. The city is also brimful with clubs and playground. Clubs includes clubs for the tycoons, football club, cricket club, the royal Calcutta Golf Club. The city has a large number stadium (football, cricket and Hockey). Eden garden cricket stadium is one of the largest in the word. It is near to Maidan(vast Goger Math) Also big is the salt lake football stadium with about two lac seats. The Howrah Bridge seems to be the identity of the city the largest (and perhaps the only) one in India. Besides there remains Viddasagar Suspension bridge.
Despite its good transport system with modern vehicles the city has a large collection of man-pulled rickshaw of course plying in lane and by-lane. It may be termed as Kolkata’s legacy. Rickshaws are plying only in lanes and by-lanes.
Once the city was called the dirtiest mega city of India. Even the old town looks dirty and filthy with congested buildings and shoping centres. Say for example, Boro Bazar, Bahu Bazar, Ras Bihari Avenue Sadar Street. Nevertheless Calcutta cleaning operarion started during the incumbency of Joti Bosy as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Now the face of Kolkata is rapidly changing with flyovers, skylines, modern city centres and shoping malls. Traffic system ensures a jam-free street. Amazingly underground metro train first introduced in Calcutta. Besides it is populous city with a large number of floating populations, the provincial government adopted the policy of urban decentralization.
The dwellers find no difficulty reaching the offices in time from the locations far away from the down town. Circular buses and metro rail carry the people from far flung areas. ‘The main mode of transportation, like other parts of Kolkata includes air conditioned, non-AC government and private buses, taxi, and other popular Indian transports like Auto rickshaws and e-rickshaws. As of 2015, around 300 buses on 25 different bus routes, either passes through or originates from New Town. As of November 2016, the New Garia – Airport line of the Kolkata metro is under-construction with cost inflation and delays There is also a plan to extend the circular train from Bidhannagar Road (Ultadanga) to New Town via Lake town and Salt Lake. The Netajee Subash Bose international airport is very near to the township, providing air connectivity to the rest of the world. Overall the area is being well planned with wide, thoughtfully planned roads and expressways.’
Kolkata is also called a port city. Obviously. “In fact, it’s the only state in north eastern India which is not land-locked! It has a major port in the capital city of Kolkata. The Port of Kolkata is a riverine port, located around 203 kilometres (126 mi) from the sea. It is the oldest operating port in India, and was constructed by the British East India Company.”
The river looks like a mini-sea beach. “The Port has two distinct dock systems – Kolkata Docks at Kolkata and a deep water dock at Haldia Dock Complex, Haldia. In the 19th century Kolkata Port was the premier port in British India. After independence its importance decreased because of factors including the Partition of Bengal (1905), reduction in size of the port hinterland and economic stagnation in eastern India. It has a vast hinterland comprising the entire North East of India including West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, North East Hill States and two landlocked neighbouring countries namely, Nepal and Bhutan and also the Autonomous Region of Tibet (China). With the turn of the century the volume of throughput has again started increasing steadily.”
New Town, a neighborhood of Kolkata located in Kolkata district of the Indian state of West Bengal, is a fast-growing planned satellite city. This new information technology and residential hub is being developed on the north-eastern fringes of Kolkata.
It is fast growing vertically. New Town, is a fast-growing planned satellite town and a neighbourhood of Kolkata (earlier, Calcutta), located partly in North 24 parganas south 24 parganas districtan. It consists of areas of two erstwhile villages Rajarhat and Bhangar, which is now a statutory planned development area. The area mainly consisted of huge acres of cultivable lands and water bodies, which have been acquired and developed in a planned manner. The process of investing in residential and industrial facilities and infrastructural development of the area has mainly started under the leadership of Buddha Dev Bhattacharya in the late 1990s. The master plan envisions a township which is at least three times bigger than the neighbouring planned Salt Lake town.
The New Town (Rajarhat) has been also declared as a Solar City by the previous UPA government at the Centre and now the initiatives are being taken to declare this city as Smart Green City, a dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the help of Mamata Banerjee, according to a proposal submitted by her.
The New Town Kolkata was enabled with 10.5 km of Wi-Fi Zone connecting the Main Arterial Road to the airport to Sector V, which also make it India’s first Wi-Fi road connectivity. The stretch has already been declared as a green corridor. (Wikipedia)
Rajarhat town is planned for a population of 10 lakhs, however, as of December 2016; the residential population of New Town is estimated to be around 30,000. With the completion of the establishment and development of the township, the population of the area is poised for a significant increase.
The sex ratio, literacy rate and every other regional statistics are expected to see radical changes within a few years. The existing populace was mainly engaged in subsistence agriculture, animal husbandry, and skilled and unskilled labour.
The population intended to be settled here is the elite professional segment, the upper-middle and middle-classes.
Also, non-resident Indians are investing in residential and commercial spaces. It will be a vibrant cosmopolitan demographic mix. n
