The officials concerned and farmers are expecting a good wheat production as the tender plants are growing well despite a shortfall in the acreage this season in Rangpur agriculture region.
Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said the farmers have cultivated wheat on 21,419 hectares of land, 5,068 hectares or 19.13 percent less than the fixed target of bringing 26,487 hectares under its farming this time in the region.
The DAE has fixed a target of producing 88,732 tonnes of wheat from 26,487 hectares of land in all five districts under the region during this Rabi season.
However, the farmers finally brought 2,647 hectares of land under wheat cultivation in Rangpur, 2,680 hectares in Gaibandha, 8,997 hectares in Kurigram, 1,830 hectares in Lalmonirhat and 5,265 hectares of land in Nilphamari districts under the region. Horticulture Specialist of DAE at its regional office Khondker Md. Mesbahul Islam said the fixed wheat farming target could not be achieved following various reasons, including more crop diversification.
“Despite shortfall in farming target, the farmers are expected to achieve better yield of the crop as they have sowed high quality, disease resistant and stress tolerant variety wheat seeds timely using latest technologies,” he said.
The farmers have mostly cultivated high yielding variety wheat like ‘Bijoy’, ‘Pradip’, ‘Sotabdhi’, BARI Gom25, BARI Gom26, BARI Gom27, BARI Gom28 and BARI Gom29 this time.
Deputy Director of the DAE at its regional office Md Moniruzzaman said harvest of wheat will begin by this month end as 60.40 percent of the growing plants are at tillering, 30.21 percent at panicle initiation and 8.65 percent at booting stages now in the region.
Talking to BSS, farmers Echhahaq Ali of village Kathihara and Ariful Haque of village Najirdigar here said that they are expecting excellent wheat production this time as the tender pants growing superbly amid favourable climatic conditions.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE Md Shah Alam said cultivation of the high yielding and stress tolerant wheat varieties adopting latest technologies has started increasing in the region.
He suggested the farmers for large-scale adoption of the CA-based technologies to increase wheat yield at reduced costs saving huge seed, irrigation water, power and fuel for ensuring food security.
