BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said in a briefing with international media about the verdict that sent BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia to jail to keep her away from the elections.
He said the verdict is illegal and violation of law. This verdict has been politically motivated. But it is not permissible under rule of law.
In the briefing, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, Begum Khaleda Zia was sentenced, not under the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) law. So he claimed that Khaleda Zia could not be accused of corruption.
He said, we will appeal in High Court against the verdict. If the government does not obstruct, she will come out innocent.
Claiming that around 3,850 BNP activists were arrested around the country, Mirza Fakhrul demanded the release of all the leaders and workers including the BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
Barrister Moudud and Khandaker Mosharraf said, Khaleda Zia has no connection with corruption. The verdict does not mention the connection of Khaleda Zia’s with corruption.
BNP leaders said there is no government fund for orphans. Foreign Affairs Minister Mostafizur Rahman, who had come from Kuwait, took the money. He used the government to release the money. It spends some money, but the rest is in the bank, which is now three times the interest. As a result, there is no case of misuse the fund.
BNP leaders said that Tarique Rahman is acting chairman of the party, according to the constitution of the party has received this responsibility. The team will be led by the party and its standing committee.
