Speakers at a seminar on Tuesday underscored the need for expansion and extensive use of Bangla language in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to facilitate communication and e-services.
The researchers, developers and programmers involved in Bangla language research and product development should work in a coordinated way to resolve the technical problems instead of doing the same in an isolated manner, they told the seminar on ‘Connect Bangla’.
“Coordination among the researchers, developers and programmers who are working for technical development of Bangla language is a must to carry forward the technical works of Bangla” said Education Secretary Md Nazrul Islam Khan who inaugurated the seminar held at the auditorium of United International University (UIU).
Jointly organized by Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) and UIU the function was addressed, among others, by Team member of Google Translate Keith Stevens, Director of BCC Md. Enamul Kabir, Country Engineering Consultant of Google Dr. Khan Md. Anwar Us Salam.
Pro Vice Chancellor of UIU Professor Dr. Chowdhury Mafizur Rahman Chaired the session. While presenting keynote paper Stevens said Google has launched a community portal (https://translate.google.com/community) for those who are interested to work using google translator.
Head of Computer Science and Engineering Department of UIU Dr. Hasan Sarwar presented a paper on Bangla Optical Character Recognition (OCR) that received innovation fund from Access to Information (A2I) Programme of Prime Minister’s Office.
Besides, Professor of English department of Gono University Dr. Monsur Musa, Modern Language University of Dhaka University Professor Shishir Bhattacharjee, Dr. Reza Selim of SUST and CEO of Surjamukhi Ltd. Fida Haq also presented papers and projects on Bangla language related technical and other issues.
