A Chittagong court on Sunday framed charges against Abdur Rahman Bodi, former Awami League lawmaker from Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency, in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing illegal wealth.
The charge was framed at the court of Chittagong District and Sessions Judge Md Ismail Hossain. The court fixed October 15 for hearing the witnesses of the case.
Claiming Bodi was implicated in the case, his lawyer Rafiqul Islam submitted a discharge petition to the court.
On the other hand, ACC Public Prosecutor of Chittagong Kazi Sanwar Ahmed prayed to the court for starting the trial proceedings of the case.
After hearing both parties, the court rejected the defendant’s petition and framed charges against Bodi.
“There is no chance to acquit the accused as the ACC in its investigation found evidence of concealing information and amassing wealth beyond known sources,” said the ACC public prosecutor.
As the charge was read aloud before the accused in the dock, the former lawmaker claimed himself to be innocent and demanded justice.
Earlier in 2007, the ACC filed the case accusing Bodi on charges of concealing information of Tk43 lakh and amassing wealth beyond known sources amounting to Tk66.70 lakh.
Kazi Sanwar Ahmed, ACC Public Prosecutor of Chittagong, told media that the charge sheet of the case was submitted to the court in 2008.
The case proceedings remained stalled as the accused obtained a stay order on the case from the High Court. The case was activated in 2017 following an appeal against the order.
