UNB, Dhaka :
BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Sunday termed the delay in appointing the new Chief Justice an ‘evil design’ of the government.
Speaking at a discussion, he also opposed the government’s step to build a new cantonment after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s name, saying it will not be good for the country.
“There’s no scope for keeping the post of the Chief Justice vacant even for a day as per the constitution. You (govt) are buying time in appointing the
Chief Justice as part of an evil strategy,” the BNP leader said. He demanded the government immediately appoint the Chief Justice.
Jhenidah Jatiyatabadi Student Forum in Dhaka arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, demanding the release of arrested BNP chairperson’s adviser Moshiur Rahman and former MP Abdul Wahab.
Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, said Law Minister Anisul Huq’s remark that the constitution does not stipulate any timeframe for the president to appoint a new chief justice is a wrong explanation. “You (govt) shouldn’t think we don’t understand the reason behind taking time. You’re doing it to keep the judges under pressure. We protest your move.”
He also urged the government not to destroy the judiciary to make its political gain. “We hope the post of the Chief Justice will be filled soon to remove the uncertainty and void prevailing in the Supreme Court.”
Earlier on November 14, President Abdul Hamid accepted the resignation letter sent by Chief Justice SK Sinha from abroad. The senior most judge of the Appellate Division, Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, was made the acting chief justice as Sinha went to Australia on leave on October 13.
