Chapainawabganj Correspondent :
Erosion of the river Padma at Charbagdanga union under Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila has taken a serious turn rendering at least 90 families of Roadpara village of the union homeless during the recent times.
Two more villages like Kairapara and Maldanga, Charbagdanga UP Complex, a number of educational institutions and Padma river’s left bank protection project which was implemented at a cost of Tk. 300 crore have come under the threat of erosion.
A UP member Jamal Uddin and resident of Roadpara village said, his house was at Bakher Ali village under the same union and he shifted his house to Roadpara as the erosion of the river Padma devoured his house in 1996. But again this village went into the river during the last two years’ erosion of the Padma, he added.
Hasenur Begum of the same village said, she had to shift her house twice due to erosion during the last 20 years and now she has no ability to settle herself anywhere. Sohel Rana Mukul of Malbagdanga village said that his two mango orchards on 10 bighas of land went into the river basin this year.
Chairman of Charbagdanga union Shahid Rana Tipu said, a number of important institutions like the UP complex, a madrasha, a government primary school, office of the Palli Bidyut Samity and Kairapara and Malbagdanga villages have come under the threat of erosion as erosion in the area has taken a very serious turn at the increase of flood water in the river. He added that last year the river was about a kilometre away from the present position. While contacted, executive engineer of the Water Development Board in Chapainawabganj Syed Shahidul Alam admitted that the erosion of the river Padma washed away more than 100 houses, mango orchards and agricultural lands during the last two years.
He added that a project proposal of Tk. 106 crore has been sent to the WDB head office for the protection of the two kilometres long left bank of the river Padma from Goaldubi to Narukhakipara. They are now waiting for the report of the technical committee and the approval of the head office, he further added.
