Ensuring social security of schoolgirls emphasized

Speakers at a discussion unanimously viewed that ensuring social and economic security of the schoolgirls has become an urgent need for enriching the list of empowered women and their leadership They viewed there is no alternative to transform girls into worthy citizens for cherished development of the nation. All leaders of influence including parents, teachers and members of school managing committee should put in their level best efforts to reach the goal.
The Hunger Project Bangladesh (THPB) organized the ceremony yesterday at Mohanpur Upazila Parishad auditorium in Rajshahi in association with Her Choice Programme and Safe School for Girls Campaign.
On the occasion, four high schools and 36 teachers, parents and youth units were given Initiative Award- 2016 for their laudable contribution to ensuring security of schoolgirls.
Earlier, a total of 16 schools in Dhurail, Mougachhi, Bakshimoil and Jahanabad unions under Mohanpur upazila were brought under a year-round observation for the award.
Upazila Chairman Abdus Salam, Associate Prof. Masudul Hassan and Deputy Chief Veterinary Surgeon Dr Hemayetul Islam from Rajshahi University, Upazila Youth Development Officer Rokonuzzaman Talukder, Social Service Officer Md Towhiduzzaman and THPB Area Coordinator Subrata Kumar Paul spoke on the occasion.
Upazila Education Officer Joynal Abedeen chaired the meet. The discussants viewed ensuring safe schools for the girls through combating all sorts of violence especially sexual harassment against them is a very vital for boosting skilled human resources coupled with women empowerment.
Sexual harassment restricts girls’ rights to education, rights to mobility and rights to freedom. So, this crime must be uprooted through forging a social movement.
Gender-sensitive social mindset can help establishing rights of the adolescents through reducing violence and repression against them. During his concept paper presentation, Subrata Paul, highlighted the aims and objectives of the event and sought cooperation of all quarters to establish equal economic opportunity and justice to girls.
He says the campaign intends to ensure equal scopes and economic opportunity and justice to women and girl child so that the sustainable development goals are achieved by 2030 including successful implementation of the government’s national action plan 2013- 2025 for preventing violence against women and children.
“We need to establish social networks and alliances involving government and non-government organisations, community people, civil society and media to reach the cherished goal,” said Upazila Chairman Abdus Salam.
