A day-long national workshop on “Media Response in Humanitarian and Disaster Contexts” jointly organized by the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies of Dhaka University (DU) and Oxfam Bangladesh was held on Sunday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated it as the chief guest.
Director of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies of DU Prof. Dr. Mahbuba Nasreen Presided over the inaugural function while Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Prof Dr Khondoker Mokaddem Hossain, Chairman of BSS Prof Dr Golam Rahman and Country Director of Oxfam Bangladesh Snehal Soneji addressed it as special guests.
Dhaka University Vice- Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique urged the media persons to play objective role for creating awareness on social problems among the people.
He said now families, societies, nations and above all the human civilization are facing all sorts of violence due to lack of humanitarian values and religious norms. Therefore, media will have to uphold humanitarian values in the society, he added. Terming Pakistan Army’s genocide during the Liberation War in Bangladesh the VC said we have been suffering from the both man-made and natural disasters for long time.
The media presented the scenario of those disasters to the general people, he said. The VC recalled the objective role of media during our Liberation War in 1971. Dhaka University authorities have decided to cut academic, cultural, sports and social ties with Pakistan for their barbaric killings in 1971, he mentioned.  
It may be mentioned that a total of 40 Journalists from different media participated in the workshop.
