Barishal City dwellers facing acute crises for drinking water supply this summer and this problem reached intensified due to reduction of underground water level in the city.
Mainly Islam, Executive Engineer of Public Health Engineering Department, Barishal Office, said underground water level in Barishal city area dropped to 40 feet from 25 feet and as a result underground water lifting pumps and tubules failing to extract water.
Since last 3/4 years water level reduced at least 15 feet in summer time. In rainy season under ground water level full field with rainy water raising available water level, but in summer time level of underground water decreased more becoming difficult to find water level only after reaching 40 feet, he added.
Excessive extraction of ground water and changing climate to more dryness may be main causes for drooping water level. PHED official assumed.
However Humayun Kabir, executive engineer of water supply section, said BCC yet not received charges of two surface water treatment plants (SWTP) using water of Kirtankhola River at Rpatali and Beltala areas from PHED due to some technical faults.
Capacities of those two SWTP were 3.2 core liters. If those two SWTP could start water supply then problem may cut down largely, he hoped.
About six lakhs residents in thirty wards of Barishal City Corporation (BCC) area have average demand of 5.6 core liter water per day and now BCC could supply only 2.9 core liters, said Khairul Islam, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of (BCC).
Among the thirty wards of BCC, residents especially of different slum areas, now facing acute crisis of drinking water supply. Most of city dwellers failed to take drinking water using hand pumped tubewels. They collecting drinking water directly from pump houses or electric motor driven deep tubewel pumps, said Abdullah, one of the resident of Kawnia area of the city.
Sathi, one resident of Barishal Stadium slum area of the city, told they collecting drinking water from a private deep tubewel crossing half kilometer away.
Hasina Begum, one of the city dwellers at Palashpur Slum area, said they never seen such acute crisis of drinking water in recent years.
Hayatuni Begum, a house wife of BCC ward no.-2, said they forced to waste huge time to collect drinking water from far distances.
To face drinking water supply crisis, we arranged supplying drinking water in slum area through temporary water supply van, said Khairul Islam, CEO of BCC.
