THE attempt to snatch Tk 10.5 lakh from a businessman in the downtown Motijheel on Wednesday by a policeman has again raised question over the moral stance of some policemen and the training method in which they underwent. Trader Abul Kalam when headed towards a bank to deposit money after withdrawing from another bank, Mamun introduced him as a cop and asked Kalam to get on a motorbike with him and Jitu. On the way, when the trader suspected them fake, he hit Mamun, a constable of Bangshal Police Station, and started screaming. Locals then held Mamun and handed him over to police while Jitu fled the scene.
Meanwhile in Jashore, a mother of two has alleged that a Police Sub-Inspector and his three informants raped her on Tuesday night. Though police refuted the claimed, the accused SI was suspended. Earlier on August 2, a woman was gang-raped by police in Khulna Railway police station. In February, a girl accused two policemen raped her in Manikganj. About the allegations against police, withdrawing the cops from the duty is seen as the major punishment. In most instances no case is actually filed and no trial is committed. As an example, Jashore SI was exempted from the rape case intentionally. Allegations against policemen about their involvement in different crimes have been rising in the recent days.
Police force is the country’s main law enforcement agency which is administered under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It’s main job is playing crucial role in maintaining peace, and enforcement of law and order. The police also play a big role in the criminal justice system. But it’s very miserable that the force which get salary from the public taxes for providing them protection and security has become the violators in many aspects.
We must say high-ups of the police force would take immediate initiatives to stop such criminal activities by a section of their unscrupulous members. The men whose activities are tarnishing the image of entire force should be properly punished.
