The High Court on Tuesday termed the statements and counter-statements issued by few professional bodies, over Sunday’s incident of a heated altercation involving a doctor, a magistrate and a police officer over movement pass, “unexpected”.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir said, “All public servants of the republic must discharge their professional duties properly. All are now under pressure due to Covid-19 pandemic. Somehow, an incident (of altercation) has taken place. Few professional bodies have reportedly issued statement and counter-statement which is not expected.”
The bench passed the observation after Supreme Court lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond placed some newspaper reports published on Tuesday and some statements also over the incident for passing an order for inquiry into the incident.
The HC bench, however, refused to entertain the verbal prayer of Eunus Ali, saying that it will look into the matter if any aggrieved person of the incident moves any petition.
“Mr Eunus Ali Akond, you are not a person aggrieved with the incident,” Justice M Enayetur Rahim said.
The HC bench asked Attorney General AM Amin Uddin to look into the matter over the issuance of statements on the incident.
Attorney General Amin Uddin told the HC that the incident of altercation involving a doctor, a magistrate and police is “unfortunate”.
Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) unit and Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) on Monday issued separate statements over the incident.
Yesterday, the same bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim refused to pass any order regarding the incident of altercation, the video footage of which went viral on social media on Sunday.
The incident occurred when the physician was pressed to show a movement pass amid a “lockdown”, despite her identity as a healthcare professional.
