Staff Reporter :Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)’ Mobile court realized Tk 12,000 from at least 250 jaywalkers for crossing the city roads, violating the traffic rules, at the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel, the Banglamotor, the Karwan Bazar and Farmgate intersections on Wednesday- the second consecutive day of the drive against jaywalkers. A woman was awarded one month jail, as she bit a female police official when she (Police personnel) stopped her crossing the road and asked to use the foot over bridge. It happened at Kawran Bazar intersection around 4:30pm. DMP has been conducting drives against the jaywalkers in the city from Tuesday and imposing fine on each of the errant pedestrians to the range of Tk 50 to Tk 200, DMP’s Assistant Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Saidur Rahman said. Metropolitan Magistrate Abdul Quddus said that they were conducting drive with the mobile courts from 10:00am to 5:00pm.DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed visited Karwan Bazar intersection to have the glimpse of the progress of the drive around noon and expressed satisfaction, he said. Two DMP mobile courts punished at least 500 people who violated the traffic rules on the street on Tuesday. Tk 30,000 was realized as fine from the jaywalkers on the first day.Mixed reactions from the pedestrians were received on the first day of the drive. Some of hem expressed satisfaction, while some others were unhappy because they had to stand in queue to get on the foot over bridges and zebra crossings, sources said. After a three-day awareness campaign, the DMP started the drive along the Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue on Tuesday under a pilot project, they added.
