Death of physically challenged rickshaw puller sparks protest in Rangpur

A police constable and his wife have been arrested on charge of murdering a physically challenged rickshaw puller in Rangpur city.
Police arrested Constable Hasan Ali and his wife Sathi Begum in face of protests by local people. The rickshaw puller Nazmul Islam (30) was beaten to death allegedly by the couple.
The incident took place at Ashratpur Eidgah Para Road (Ward no-27) in Rangpur city on Wednesday afternoon.
Local people blocked the road protesting the killing. Police charged baton to dispersed the protesters leaving four people injured.
Later, additional police force was deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.

lam was living in a rented house at Ashratpur. He used to rent a battery-powered rickshaw as he had problems with his legs.
The rickshaw belonged to constable Hasan Ali, who is working at the Rangpur Police Training Center. He also rented a house in Ashratpur Courtpara area in the city and lived with his family.
Nazmul’s rickshaw was stolen on Tuesday night. He tried hard to recover the rickshaw and return it to owner Hasan Ali. But police constable Hasan Ali called him home with the accusation of being a thief and tortured him.
At one stage, health condition of Nazmul deteriorated severely. Sensing trouble, the couple hanged the victim inside their house with a rope around his neck. Later his death was branded as suicide.
Police recovered a hammer and a machete from the scene as a tool of torture while retrieving Nazmul’s body. There were marks of injuries on his body and his nails were found crushed.
Locals started protesting after seeing Nazmul’s body hanging in the house yesterday afternoon. Upon receiving the news, police rushed to the spot. But the agitated people also blocked them.
At one stage, the agitated people started a protest by setting fire on the Rangpur-Kurigram highway. As a result, traffic movement remained suspended on the road from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
The mob vandalized several vehicles including auto rickshaws at that time. They also locked in clashes with police. Police resorted to baton charge to disperse the protesters.
About after two hours, a large number of police arrived on the spot and brought the situation under control. The body of the deceased was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali Zone) Altab Hossain said the situation was under control. Policeman Hasan Ali and his wife Sathi Begum were arrested over the incident.
