DAE expecting bumper production of maize in Bogra

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and farmers of Bogra district are expecting bumper production of fresh maize across the district including vast Barind tract in this current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 9150 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation of the district with a production target of 121280 metric tonnes of maize. The farmers have been showing immense interest in maize cultivation this season in the district encouraged by the excellent economic return from cultivating the crop in recent years, DAE added.
Farmers said, we mostly depend on the maize cultivation as the soli of these noted upazilas are suitable for the crop cultivation. Maize is being used in preparation of various nutritional foods like corn-well, corn-flex, poultry and animal feed and fodder and in several industrial products as well, they further said.
While visiting the different area of the district the correspondent found the farmers are rearing the crops land defying hot of sun from the early morning to late at night aiming bumper production and financially self-reliant from the very early of December to last week of February. The farmers have cultivated 900-M, 900-gold, supershine-2710, supershine-2760, Meraccel and NK-40 variety of maize in this season with the assistance of local DAE offices. The demand for the crop is increasing gradually of the poultry and dairy farms in all twelve upazilas of the region from last decade.
Iman Ali, 44, a maize grower of Shibginj upazila said, he had brought over two bighas of land under maize cultivation last year and achieved a total 65 mounds. He had made over tk 45000 from the land as he had sold each mound of maize by tk 1000 in the local kitchen market, he added.
“I have brought five bighas of land under maize cultivation in this season spending tk 44000 and I expect to produce over 120-130 maunds of maize from the crop land if the weather condition remain favourable till June.” said farmer Abdul Hossain of Gabtoly upazila. He further said, “I expect to make a profit tk 80000 if the price remains high after harvesting the crops.
