The super cyclone ‘Amphan’ that lashed the country on May 20 last has caused damage to standing crops worth Taka nine crore 72 lakh 11 thousand and 130 in Rangpur agriculture region.
Talking to media on Tuesday, officials at the regional office of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) of Rangpur said that super cyclone ‘Amphan’ damaged standing crops on 401 hectares of land affected 10,497 farmers in four districts of the region.
“The affected districts are Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat,” Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur region Agriculturist Muhammad Ali said, adding that no crop damage was reported from Nilphamari district of the region.
The ‘Amphan’ has caused damage mainly to the standing crops like Boro rice, maize, vegetables, green chilli, banana, sesame, mungbean, mango and betel nut in four out of total five districts in the region.
The super cyclone damaged the crops worth about Taka one crore 26 lakh and 12 thousand on 36 hectares of land of 345 farmers in Rangpur district.
The amount of crop damage in the region is the highest in Gaibandha district where the cyclone destroyed standing crops on 272 hectares of land affecting 6,650 farmers causing crop losses worth Taka seven crore 34 lakh and 65 thousand.
In Kurigram district, standing crops on 89 hectares of land were damaged affecting 3,190 farmers causing crop losses amounting to Taka one crore 14 lakh and 60 thousand.
In Lalmonirhat district, the super cyclone damaged standing crops on only 2.33 hectares of land affecting 312 farmers causing crop losses worth about Taka one lakh.
‘The ‘Amphan’ has caused maximum damage to the standing vegetables on 271.40 hectares of land badly affecting 5,620 farmers and causing the maximum crop losses amounting to Taka five crore 85 thousand and 500 in the region,” Ali said.
It was primarily thought that the ‘Amphan’ would not hit the Rangpur agriculture region, he said, adding “But, it lashed the region, totally damaging huge standing crops on 401 hectares of land.”
“After assessing the situation of damages caused to the standing crops by the super cyclone in the region, we have already sent the report to the higher authorities,” Agriculturist Ali added.
Talking to media, vegetable farmer Amez Uddin of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur said he had cultivated ‘Korola’ (Balsam) on 35 decimals of land this season.
“Amphan had totally damaged my standing Balsam crop causing huge losses to me,” Amez Uddin regretted.
Similarly, farmers Solaiman Ali, Abdul Haque, Lokman Hossain, Echhahaq Ali and Rahim Uddin of different villages in Rangpur said the super cyclone had totally damaged their excellent growing crops, including vegetables, on their crop fields causing losses.
