To cherish the memory of Rock Legend Ayub Bachchu, Chittagong University (CU) is going to set up ‘Ayub Bachchu Corner’ at its central museum. The decision came up after the funeral of the legend at family graveyard on Saturday.
“He is a gem of our country. The university authority will be honoured to do something to pay homage to his memory,” said Prof Dr Farid Uddin Ahmed, Syndicate member of CU.
Prof Dr Farid, Dean of Social Science Faculty, also said all Syndicate members agreed on establishing the corner and soon we will approve the proposal. If his family members provide us with some of his guitars and accessories he used, we will arrange to preserve them, he added.
Prof Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of CU said, Ayub Bachchu scheduled to perform in an open concert at the next orientation programme which will take place January 1, 2019. VC also asked Bachchu to give some musical instruments during his lifetime and he agreed.
To recall his memory and keep alive this creation we will create the corner for upcoming generation, VC added.
The rock star died after a heart attack at his home in the capital on 18 October. He was 56. Ayub Bachchu, popularised rock music in Bangladesh with his band LRB. The singer, guitarist, lyricist and composer was the founding member of the band LRB (Love Runs Blind).
In addition to his extraordinary role in rock music as a singer and composer, Bachchu was one of the leading guitarists in the country. He was also well-known for his distinctive style and the flamboyant look of his guitars, which captivated audiences for over four decades.
Ayub Bachchu was born in Chattogram in 1962. In an interview Bachchu said he always loved music and became a singer through ‘trial and error’ during his early years. He fell in love with the western music and began to play guitar. He drew inspiration from the guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani and Steve Moore. While in college he formed a band ‘Ugly Boys.’ They performed at neighbourhood functions.
As a professional, he joined the band ‘Feelings’ in 1978 and then the band ‘Souls’ in 1980. After playing with them for 10 years, he formed LRB or Love Runs Blind in 1991.
Bachchu’s band performed more than 500 open-air and about 2,000 indoor concerts at home and abroad, according to its website.
