Marooned flood victims need immediate succour

The flood situation in several districts, including Sunamganj, has worsened further with heavy rains and onrush of water from the upstream, while it improved slightly in Lalmonirhat.The water flows in the rivers Padma, Jamuna, Brahmaputra and Surma rose further above the danger marks in several points on Monday. As a result, several lakh people in these river basins are still in marooned. The flood has adversely affected Aman crops and vegetables in several areas of the country. The allocation of relief materials and the government cash assistance are still insufficient compared to the needs. In Sunamganj, the overall flood situation has deteriorated further due to incessant rainfalls and onrush of water from the upstream. The waters of Surma and other rivers have inundated vast areas of eight upazilas of the district. The upazilas are Duyarabazar, Tahirpur, Biswambapur, Jamalganj, Sunamganj Sadar, South Sunamganj, Dharmapasha and Chhatak. Fresh areas were inundated till Monday evening. About three lakh people in the upazilas have been marooned. At least 20 thousand families have been affected directly. People are not getting relief materials. They have taken shelter in the open sky. The local administration distributed rice and cash money to the affected area, which are insufficient compared to the needs.The water of Surma River was flowing over 93 cm of danger mark, as heavy downpour has been continuing for several days while water from the hills was also coming from the opposite side of border leading to the surging of water level in the river. 135 mm rainfall was recorded in 24-hour rain till Monday evening. Executive Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) of Sunamganj Said Ahmed said that the water level in the Surma River increased by 18 cm within 6 hours on Monday. Crops, seedlings and vegetables are being affected badly due to the flood. About 6,000 hectares of seedlings and 2,000 hectares of vegetables went under flood water. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sunamganj Sheikh Rafiqul Islam said that the flood water has been increased in several parts of the district. They have already distributed relief materials to the flood affected people and the activities will continue. In Sylhet, fresh areas in several upazilas of the district went under flood water on Monday. The flood water has submerged fresh areas of Kanaighat, Golapganj and some other parts of the district. Golapganj upazila chairman Nazmul Islam visited several flood affected villages. He said that the flood situation was worsening further in his area. In Sirajganj, although the water of Jamuna River has slightly reduced, the water of the rivers Korotoya, Hura Sagor, Gumani and Boral increased. For this reason, the overall flood situation in the district remained unchanged. The water flows of the Jamuna was 13 cm above the danger mark. Vast areas of 60 unions in seven upazilas of the district are now affected by flood.Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim, Habibe Millat Munna MP and Hasibur Rahman Swapan MP have already visited different areas of the district and distributed relief materials among the flood-hit people.In Faridpur, the water level in the rivers Padma and Arial has increased. WDB officials said that the water of the Padma River was flowing 20 cm above the danger mark. Most of the villages of Faridpur Sadar upazila went under flood water. In Kurigram, the overall flood situation remained unchanged. The river waters have inundated vast areas of the district. At least 2 lakh people are still in marooned. Vast areas of 53 unions of nine upazilas of the district went under flood water. Ropa Aman fields, seedlings and vegetables on 30 thousand hectares of land also went under flood water.Executive Engineer of WDB Kurigram Abu Taher said that the water level of the Brahmaputra and Dharla rivers increased further on Monday though the water level of these rivers decreased slightly on Sunday. DC of Kurigram ABM Amzad Hossain said that they distributed about 500 tones of rice and nine lakh taka in cash among the flood affected people. In Lalmonirhat, the flood situation has improved slight, as the Teesta water level has decreased by 10 cm and it was flowing above 5 cm of danger mark at Teesta Barrage Point of Dowani area at Hatibandha upazila. The water of the river Dharla and eight other small rivers has also decreased, reports our Lalmonirhat CorrespondentState Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Mashiur Rahman Ranga visited the flood and erosion affected Kulaghart village in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila. During the visit, the flood-hit people crowded with the hope of getting relief materials but the State Minister did not distribute relief materials, locals said.The State Minister told the affected people that they would get government help very soon. He, however, said that the local administration is preparing a list of the affected people.The flood affected people in the district are passing their day with starvation or half of starvation. They are also facing crisis of pure drinking water, as most of tube-wells in the affected areas went under flood water.Chairman of Kulaghat Union Parishad under Lalmonorhat Sadar Idris Ali said that he didn’t get any allotment of relief materials for the flood and erosion affected people in his union till Monday noon. Most of the villages of his union have been affected by the flood, he said.
