Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan said that the players are now safely inside the hotel room in Christchurch following a terrorist attack and BCB are trying to bring back at home in the first available flight. “We have been in constant touch with our government. I personally called our state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam to take necessary steps so that we can help our players catch the first available flight. The players are now safely inside the hotel,” Hasan said here on Friday.
“We don’t know what the condition of the New Zealand airport now. The state minister assured me to bring back the players as early as possible. Meanwhile we are trying to manage tickets for the players from here.”
Bangladesh team bus was about 50 yards away from one of the mosques that was attacked, leaving 49 people dead so far.
Team manager Khaled Masud Pilot said the team is lucky to escape.
“We were very close to the mosque. We could see the mosque. We are lucky in the sense that if we had arrived three four minutes earlier we would have been on the mosque and then it could have been a massive accident,” Masud said in Christchurch on Friday.
“We were lucky that we were not inside but from outside we saw it and it was quite similar like a movie. We saw people coming out of the mosque surrounded with blood. We were in the bus for eight to 10 minutes and we were lying down inside at that point as we felt if they saw us inside the bus they might come out and attack,” he said.
In the wake of the situation, the third Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand, slated to begin from today (Saturday) was cancelled.
