Chattogram Bureau :
Contrary to the writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, the Chattogram Port Authority will soon launch an operation to evict the illegal establishments at Karnafuli Laldia Char in Patenga of Chattogram district.
WASA, electricity and gas connections have already been cut off in the areas. Advocate Manzil Morshed, president of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, said on Tuesday that the latest 21 residents of Laldia Char had filed a petition to join the case and suspend the eviction process until they were rehabilitated. After the hearing, the court did not give any stay order. So there was no obstacle to eviction.
According to port sources, all preparations have been made to evict illegal installations from Laldia Char. Besides the executive magistrate of the port, five executive magistrates, 100 RAB members, 200 policemen including 50 women policemen and 100 Ansar members have been sought from the district administration. Necessary bulldozers, machinery and workers are being kept ready.
Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Omar Farooq said the port would soon launch an operation to evict illegal structures from Laldia Char on the Karnafuli River in Patenga on the orders of the High Court. Authorities have already disconnected WASA, electricity and gas from illegal installations.
