At least five cases were filed against more than 400 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its front and associate organisations with five police stations in Sylhet on Sunday.
The Sylhet Metropolitan Police filed the cases bringing charges against the activists of attacking and assaulting cops and blocking roads.
Eight Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were sent to jail by a court on Monday after police placed them in front of the court following their arrest in a case filed by the Kotwali police.
Kotwali police officer-in-charge Mosharraf Hossain said district Chhatra Dal’s former organising secretary Ekhlasur Rahman Munna was among the eight.
Sub-inspector Krishnapada Roy on Sunday night filed the case, where he mentioned names of 55 persons and complained against some other unidentified people, in connection with an attack on cops at Zatarpur in the city in the afternoon,’ said Mosharraf Hossain.
He further said a group of JCD activists attacked a police patrol team on Sunday afternoon in front the of district BNP president Abul Kaher Shamim’s residence at Zatarpur in the city that injured three cops, and the activists vandalised the auto-rickshaw of the cops.
ÔEight Chhatra Dal activists were arrested from the spot and three motorcycles were also seized,’ the police officer said.
Biman Bandar police officer-in-charge Gausul Hossain told New Age that a case was filed against 50 BNP men and many unidentified people for assaulting police personnel on charge of blocking road and attacking cops on Sunday. The BNP activists brought out a procession at Lakkhatira Tea Garden area and cops tried to inhibit them from blocking traffic movement on the Airport Road, but they attacked the cops, he said.
ÔSub-inspector Mofazzal Hossain filed the case,’ he added.
Shah Paran police OC Akhter Hossain said sub-inspector Mashiur Rahman filed a case against 30 named and more than 50 unnamed Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, who reportedly launched an attack on a police team on the MC College campus on Sunday afternoon.
Dakkhin Surma police OC Khayrul Fazal admitted that SI Benuchandra filed a case against 60 identified and many unnamed BNP activists on charge of obstructing the police from discharging their duty on Sunday afternoon when the activists brought out a procession at Kadamtali area in the city.
District BNP president Shamim complained that the police intentionally filed the cases on baseless charges to implement the government’s plot to create panic among the BNP leaders and activists ahead the forthcoming general election.
ÔThe Jalalabad police filed a case against 59 named party men and many unnamed on charge of blocking the Sylhet-Sunamganj Road on Sunday,’ he said, adding that such kind of activities were not held in the area within a month.
Metropolitan police’s additional deputy commissioner (media) Abdul Wahab, however, claimed that they had no information on filing cases against the BNP activists.
