The 30th International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the 23rd National Day of Persons with Disabilities was celebrated in Rangpur with the theme of sustainable development, leadership and participation of persons with disabilities in the world.
A discussion meeting, award distribution and cultural program was organised by the District Administration and Department of Social Services (DSS), Rangpur at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office on Friday morning. Rangpur DC Asib Ahsan, Rangpur Deputy Director Abdul Mottaleb Sarkar presided over the meeting, Rangpur Superintendent of Police Ferdous Ali Chowdhury, Rangpur Civil Surgeon Dr. Hiramb Kumar Roy, Deputy Director Abdul Matin and Birmukti. , Major (Retd) Nasim Ahmed, Advocate Jobaidul Islam Bullet, General Secretary of Nazrul Sangha Library Rashidus Sultan Bablu and others. Later, a pleasant cultural programme was held for the disabled.
Social activists working for welfare of disabled population including valiant freedom fighter Akbor Hossain, Major (Retd) Md Nasim Ahmed, Adv Zobaydul Islam Bullet and General Secretary of Nazrul Sangha Pathagar Rashidus Sultan Bablu also spoke.
 Deputy Director of the DSS Md Abdul Matin delivered a welcome speech discussing massive programs being implemented by the government for mainstreaming the disabled persons in the society through ensuring their rights, development and empowerment.
 The speakers stressed on establishing disabled-friendly atmosphere everywhere for ensuring rights to education, health care and social honour with dignity for the disabled people to properly flourish their leadership, inherent talents and abilities.
 The chief guest said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working for inclusive development of disabled people and making them self- employed and self-reliant through providing various need-based training and necessary assistance.
 “The DSS is providing training and support in various ways to persons with disabilities as they are also contributing to the national progress on the way to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and build a development Bangladesh by 2041,” he said.
Staff Reporter, Kishoreganj reports: The International and National Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed across in the country with a call for ensuring participation of the people with disabilities to build a sustainable post COVID-19 world.
The Department of Social Welfare in Kishoreganj including District Administration have taken various programmes including discussion, rally, wheelchair distribution marking the day.
A discussion meeting was held atl Child Family (Girls) Auditorium on Friday morning.
Civil Surgeon( CS) Dr Mujibur Rahman attended as Chief Guest and ADC (Edu
& Ict) Md. Golam Mostafa as special guest, while Deputy Director of Department of Social Service Kamruzzaman Khan presided over the function.
It was addressed among others by Assistant Director (AD) Md. Shahidul, District Press Club President Mostafa Kamal and Social Welfare Officer Salma Khanam .
CS Dr. Mujibur Rahman said, it is imperative to integrate people with disabilities with the mainstream of development to ensure their empowerment.
BSS from Rajshahi adds: Speakers at a participatory discussion said the people with special needs should be given some additional privileges for their proper rehabilitation and family integration.
They view holistic and collective efforts of both the public and private organisations have become an urgent need for ensuring their fundamental rights which are keys to their social dignity.
Terming the challenged people as an integral part of the society, the speakers put emphasis on mainstreaming them through creating a friendly atmosphere for people with disabilities. The physically challenged people should never be judged as a burden to society.
