Comprehensive efforts and community-based early preparedness with efficient emergency response management systems can reduce losses of lives and properties during earthquake and other natural disasters.
The views were expressed at an orientation workshop on ‘Enhancing Inclusive Disaster Resilience in Bangladesh (EIDRB)’ project organised by Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) and ‘Pollishree’ at its office in the city on Saturday. The workshop was arranged for formation of the Ward No-26 unit of the Disaster Management Committee for enhancing disaster management capacities of the local communities in building a disaster resilient society.
The workshop was arranged on behalf of the National Alliance for Risk Reduction and Response Initiatives (NARRI) Consortium with Oxfam-GB funding to institutionalise the Community-based Disaster Management Preparedness Model (CBDP) involving local population at the ward levels.
City Councilor for Ward No-26 Abdur Razzaque Mandal presided over the workshop participated by members of the Community-based Organisations, civil society members, common people, professionals and local elite.
Female City Councilor from reserved Ward Mrs. Manjuri Begum, President of City Contractors’ Association Lokman Hossain, former Health Inspector Rostam Ali, social worker Israil Haque Khokan and valiant freedom fighter Mazharul Islam Mohan, addressed, among others.
Project Advocacy and Communication Officer of EIDRB project of ‘Pollishree’ Rezaul Karim Reza delivered welcome speech narrating objectives of the project while its Project Officer Shikha Rani Duta moderated the workshop.
The speakers discussed on various types of natural disasters like earthquake, statistics with loses of human lives, properties and suggested way-outs for reducing disaster risks in the disaster-prone areas amid adverse climate change impacts.
