The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Sunday launched an eviction drive against the illegal makeshift shops in the city.
Around 120 members of CMP with the help of Chittagong City Corporation evicted more than one thousand illegal establishments, including makeshift shops, from Dewanhat intersection to Cement Crossing intersection of the city. Contacted, AKM Shahidur Rahman, Additional Commissioner of CMP told journalists that they, as part of the drive, cleared all obstacles including makeshift shops to ensure smooth traffic movement on the roads.
“Primarily we launched the drive from Dewanhat intersection to Cement Crossing intersection of the city. However, the drives would continue in the days to come,” Shahidur added. Mostaque Ahmed, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Bandar Zone), CMP said that they evicted more than one thousand makeshift shops on the first day of the drive.
“However, no punitive action was taken against anyone as it was the first day of the drive. We wanted to make it sure that the main road remains free from all types of makeshift kitchen markets, shops and illegally parked transports,” Mostaque added
Mentionable, a decision was taken on October 9 from a views exchange meeting to evict all illegal establishments from Dewanhat intersection to Cement Crossing in the city.
The meeting was held between the leaders of Metropolitan Hawkers’ Association and CMP commissioner Md Abdul Jalil. In the meeting, the city corporation councillors welcomed the decision and expressed to extend all support for implementing the decision.
Earlier, as part of the drives against illegal establishments on the roads, the CMP authorities launched a campaign programme in the city through loudspeakers for not creating any obstruction to the smooth traffic movement.
