Thousands of city dwellers on Wednesday suffered long delays, as they had to endure gridlocks on different city roads due to gathering of BNP and Awami League leaders and activists.
BNP leaders and activists gathered in front of their party office in the capital’s Newyapaltan area for submitting nomination papers and AL men around the Ganabhaban for attending interview programme of MP aspirants.
The leaders, activists and supporters of the two parties choked the roads leading to the venues with processions.
Buses, minibuses and cars crawled through the streets connecting Gulistan, Purana Paltan, National Press Club, the Supreme Court area, Fakirapul, Kakrail, and Matsya Bhaban to Shahbagh, Kataban, Nilkhet and New Market from midday until evening. Some vehicles tried taking the wrong side of the road to beat the jam.
The situation took a toll on traffic sergeants as they were seen giving up helplessly at some points.
Leaders and activists of the BNP, who came from outside Dhaka, first gathered on the surrounding roads and then started marching towards the main venue at Nayapaltan.
These small processions also stopped at some points.
Rabeya Mithila, a Masters student of Eden Mohila College, told The New Nation that she observed severe traffic jam on different roads of New Market and Nilkhet areas.
“There was traffic gridlock on the roads. That is why I did not hire any rickshaw for going to Nilkhet from Hasnahena Hostel of Eden Mohila College. Finally, I reached Nilkhet by walking and it took 25 minutes,” she said.
Nazrul Islam, driver of a Taranga Paribahan that runs on the Mohammadpur-Banasree route, said it took him about an hour to reach Matsya Bhaban from Shahbagh.
A Manzil Paribahan bus got stuck in traffic after reaching Zero Point from Gulistan. Then it took the driver about one and a half hours to reach Kakrail intersection.
A passenger of the bus said none of the political parties was considerate about the people.
“Be it a rally of the Awami League or the BNP, they hardly think about people. Fine, you go ahead with your rally in a safe place. Why block the roads?
Meanwhile, the people experienced severe gridlock around the roads of the Ganobhaban area as the Awami League Parliamentary Board (ALPB) arranged interview programme for nomination-seekers at there.
A total of 4,023 nomination seekers went to the Ganobhaban with thousands of their supporters. As a result, the traffic chaos hits at every point of the capital city.
