Barisal Correspondent :A human chain was formed on Saturday demanding change of site for construction of silo under World Bank Project by filling largest pond of the city related with history of liberation war. The programme was organised under the banner of Sachetan Nagorbasi (Conscious Citizens) in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall at city center. Among others Nurul Alam Farid, Nazrul Islam Chunnu, Shuvangkar Chakraborty, Kajal Ghosh, Anawar Zahid, Jiban Krishna Dey, Shanti Ghosh, Dr. Habibur Rahman addressed the programme.The speakers said they are not against the construction of ‘modern food storage facilities project’ of food department on ‘Trish Godown’ area of the city. But it could be constructed easily at other parts of premise demolishing or reconstructing old or abandoned food godowns, without affecting status and environment of adjacent mass killing ground and proposed complex on history of liberation war with a museum, the speakers opined . ‘Trish Godown’ complex was used as cantonment of Pakistani occupation forces and mass killing ground during liberation war in 1971 and so it should be preserved as part of history of independence, they added. Mentionable construction of about 3000 square meter silo with capacity for storing 48 thousand food grains, staff quarters and other structures at the cost of Tk.194.5 core, going on at ‘Trish Godown’ area.
