Parts of the ceiling and a beam of a school have collapsed in Barguna just five days after a grade-three student died in a similar incident in the district.
No casualties were reported in the latest incident that happened at Jagatchand Government Primary School Dakshin Taktabunia under Haldia union in Amtali Upazila on Wednesday morning.
A teacher was giving lessons to grade four pupils in the classroom when the disaster struck around 9am, Headmaster Md Shahidullah said.
“The students and the teacher rushed to safety after seeing the beam collapsing,” he said.
On Saturday, one student was killed and three others injured when the ceiling of Chhoto Bogi PK Government Primary School fell on them.
The Upazila authorities declared the building abandoned and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education ordered a drive to identify vulnerable primary school buildings. The school with about 150 students at Amtali has one office room and three classrooms.
The beams in the ceiling developed cracks while the cement coating in all the rooms are falling down, headmaster Shahidullah said.
Water drips down the cracks during rains, he said and added the teachers and students have been in a panic over the cracks.
The building, constructed with an around Tk 800,000 fund from LGED in 2001-02, has never been repaired, according to the headmaster.
“It has become unusable. We had pleaded for repairs several times, but there has been no response,” he said.
Several students said they have to take shelter at nearby houses during rains.
Amtali Upazila Primary Education Officer Mojibur Rahman said quick measures would be taken.
Upazila Nirbahee Officer Sarwar Hossain said the vulnerable classrooms have been closed.
