Cases against 36 companies and businessmen

Bangladesh Competition Commission has filed a case against 36 companies and businessmen including Bashundhara, S Alam, Square, Pran, ACI, City, Akiz, Meghna and other leading industrial groups of the country for creating instability through increasing ‘abnormal price and artificial crisis’.
The commission alleged that they created instability in the market through “abnormal price hikes and artificial shortages” of rice, flour, eggs, broiler chickens and toiletries. The Competition Commission filed the case under its own law last Thursday. On that day, the Commission revealed the names of 11 individuals and organizations. The rest of the names were released on Monday. In all, 44 cases have been filed against 36 businessmen and institutions.
According to the information provided by the Commission, the Chairman of Square Food and Beverage, Chairman of ACI, Managing Director of Bangladesh Edible Oil, Chairman or MD of BRAC Seed and Agro Enterprise, Chief Executive Officer or MD of Citigroup are responsible for the ‘instability’ in the rice market.
