Cargo and oil carrying vessels start strike to press home 11 point demand

Workers of cargo and oil carrying vessels started strike from early hours of Tuesday (after mid night of Monday) to press home their 11-point demands.
Passenger carrying water transports remained out of jurisdiction of the announced strike.
Bangladesh Noujan Shramik Federation (BNSF) called the strike through out the country.
The strike will continue till the realizations of our legitimate demands, said Shah E Alam Buiyan, president of the federation.
All cargo and oil carrying vessels anchored at different parts of the Kirtankhola River after starting the strike, after visiting the Barishal River Port found.
Although passenger carrying water transports remained out of the jurisdiction of announced strike due to upcoming Durga Puja festival of Hindu community, but they will also join in the strike if our legitimate demands would be ignored or not be fulfilled, cautioned Sk.Abul Hashem, secretary of Barishal unit BNSF.
BNSF sources said their 11-point demands included implementation of tri-party contract signed in 2016 between government, transport owners and workers, introducing appointment letters, service book for workers, 10 lakhs taka compensation after death during working on duty, increasing social safety nets, issuing landing pass for workers of the vessels going to India, installing and updating navigation markings of the river routes, curbing piracy, toll collection etc.
Sk.Abul Hashem, secretary of Barishal unit BNSF, said owners of the water transport failed to implement the tri-party contract signed in 2016 between owners, government and water transport workers.
Saidur Rahman Rintu, vice president of Bangladesh Launch Owners Association, said the passenger carrying launches plying on different routes as they remained out of the jurisdiction of announced strike.
We requested the workers of passenger carrying water transports not to join in strike as owners always sympathized about the workers and we want to do everything within our capacities for implementing the signed tri-party treaty, Rintu added.
