Dr Abu Mansur Mohammad Mujibul Haq, a renowned cardiologist and professor of medicine, died in New York in the USA. He was 87.
Abu Mansur died of old age complications in Middletown of New York City on December 4 , according to a press release.
He is survived by five daughters and their families.
Dr Mujibul Haq was the co-founder of the Shaheed Suhrawardy Cardiovascular Institute (now the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases) in Dhaka.
He served as the principal and head of the department of medicine at different state-run medical colleges, including Sir Salimullah Medical College in Dhaka, Rangpur Medical College and Sylhet Medical College, before joining the Institute of Postgraduate Medical Research (IPGMR, presently known as BSMMU).
After retirement from government service, he co-founded Medical College for Women and Hospital at Uttara, and served as its principal for 10 years.
Dr Haq was born in Bikrampur of Dhaka district on January 2, 1933 and did his MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College in 1956.
He also served in the army as a medical officer before leaving to pursue his MRCP (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians) in the United Kingdom, obtaining FRCP (London) and MPhil (Leeds).
He later received training in interventional cardiology from Osaka in Japan.
During the Liberation War of 1971, he assisted freedom fighters while working at the then School of Tropical Medicine in Mohakhali.
