The historic May Day was observed in different districts on Friday through various programmes with a call to establish the rights of the working people. Our Correspondents and agencies report:
Barisal Correspondent says: The historic May Day observed all over the Barisal city on Friday calling for united efforts to implement labour law properly in every sector of the country.
Different labor organizations observed the day holding colorful programs including procession, rally, discussion meeting and cultural programme .
The participants of the programmes also demanded democratic modern labor law by ratifying labor act-2006 and rights for organized trade union activities for all sectors of industries, business and professions.
District administration brought out rally from Labor Welfare Center at Amanatganj area and ended at Barisal circuit house premises addressed by administrative officials of Barisal.
Shohidul Alam, Deputy Commissioner presided the programme and it was addressed by Md. Gaus, Divisional Commissioner, Barisal as Chief Guest.
Barisal Unit Sramik League organised a procession and meeting at Sohel Square with Shahjahan Haolader in the chair.
District AL secretary and lawmaker Adv Talukdar Md. Yunus attended as chief guest of the programmes.
Barisal unit of Jatiotabadi Sramik Dal organized a procession from Aswini Kumar hall premises and held a rally there with Bashir Ahmed in the chair.
Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra observed the day demanding rights of trade union in all enterprises and ratification of labor act 2006 with fixing minimum Tk 5,000 as lowest monthly wage.
They held a meeting at City College premises with AK Azad, president of the unit, in the chair.
Barisal district Imarat Nirman Sramik Union( building construction workers union) held historic May day rally at Barisal Aswani Kumar Hall premises in the morning presided over by district president M A Jalil.
Sylhet Correspondent reports : The historic May Day was observed with a call for establishing just rights, dignity, honour, socio-economic and human rights of the working people through daylong programmes in the Sylhet districts in Friday .
The district administrations, directorate of labour, labour, trade, socio-cultural, political, professional and cultural organisations chalked out daylong programmes at the district and upazila levels in observing the day amid huge enthusiasm and festivity.
The programmes included placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minars, hoisting of the national, labour, organisational flags and red flags, processions,serving improved diets to the workers, holding of discussion meetings,cultural and prize distribution functions.
The district administration along with regional directorate of labour and many workers’ organisations organised colourful rally participated by workers, officials and employees, NGO, socio-cultural and political activists and workers.

In Rangpur, dozens of processions were organised by some 60 different organisations of the working people, including women workers, parading the streets since the morning and discussions were arranged at many places in the city.

After the processions, thousands of the working people gathered on the Central Shaheed Minar premises to attend the main discussion.
Deputy Commissioner Farid Ahammad attended the main discussion as the chief guest with President of district unit of Jatiya Sramik League Abdus Salam in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim, Additional Superintendent of Police Joynul Abedin, Acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin, its General Secretary Advocate Rezaul Karim Ranju, Office Secretary Tauhidur Rahman Tutul, City AL President Shafiar Rahman Shafi and its General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal addressed as special guests.
BSS from Rajshahi says: The historic May Day was observed in the city and other adjoining areas on Friday with a fresh vow to uphold the rights of working people with maintaining harmony between labours and owners.
Various political parties, trade unions, labour and socio- cultural
organisations had chalked out elaborate programmes including hoisting of national and labour-flags atop the offices of trade unions and labour organisations, discussion meetings, rallies and cultural functions marking the day.
In observation of the day, district administration and Divisional office of the Labour Directorate jointly organised a post-rally discussion at the labour office premises in the morning.
Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, and Akhtar Jahan, MP, addressed the discussion as the chief and special guests respectively with Akhter Hossain Khan, Joint Labour Director, in the chair.
Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, local unit president of Jatiya Shramik League Badruzzaman Khayer, President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Muniruzzaman and ADC (General) Jakir Hossain also spoke.
Terming the working class as the driving force of the national economy, the speakers said development of a nation is not possible without the development of condition of the working class.
They also laid emphasis on greater unity among the working people to establish their legal rights.
Earlier, a colorful procession paraded several streets in the city before being converged into the meeting venue.
Besides, local units of bus, truck, minibus, tempo and mishuk labourers unions took out separate processions which paraded the main city streets. The procession was followed by discussion and milad mahfil at their offices.
In observance of the day “Anushilon Nattiya Shilpi”, a cultural
organisation, organised a discussion on the premises of Court Shaheed Minar in the morning.
The leaders and members of the Imarat Nirman Shramic Association of
Bangladesh (INSAB) brought out a procession that paraded the city streets which was also followed by a milad mahfil at its office.
Local unit of Jatiya Shramic Federation organised a rally in the city marking the day and held a discussion meeting on Sadharan Public Library premises highlighting the importance of the day.
With Shramik Leader Toibur Rahman in the chair, Fazley Hossain Badsha, Workers Party Leaders Liakat Ali Liku and Rafiqul Islam Piarul spoke on the occasion.
Apart from this, different other political parties including Bangladesh Awami League and working groups brought out colourful rallies, held discussions and cultural functions to mark the day in the city.
BSS from Narayanganj reports: The historic May Day was observed here across the district today as elsewhere in the country to establish the rights of the working people.
The day is observed across the world every year since 1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifices of the workers at Hay Market, Chicago in the United States to establish the rights of eight-hour working day and uphold the rights of working class.
The theme of the day in Bangladesh this year is ‘Sramik Malik Oikka Garo, Sonar Bangla Gore Tolo’ (Let us forge worker-owner unity and build a Sonar Bangla). The day is a public holiday.
To mark the day, Different workers group, trade unions, socio-cultural and professional organizations held rallies and processions.
A colorful rally was brought out under the auspices of directorate of Labpour Narayanganj in the morning.
Deputy commissioner Anisur Rahman Miah attended the rally as the chief guest, former BKMEA senior vice president Mohammed Hatem, and welfare secretary of Jatiya Sramik League Kawsar Ahmed Polash attended the rally as special guests.
The rally was followed by a huge numbers of workers of different mills and factories. The procession after parading different roads ended at Chashara Shahid Minar.
In the afternoon the Narayanganj district unit of Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra, Garment Sramik Trade Union Kendra, Narayanganj district unit of Bangladesh Motor Jan Mechanic Federation and Bangladesh Textile Garments Sramik Federation brought out red flag rallies and processions in the city with playing of band party.
BSS from Faridpur adds: The historic May Day, commemorating the first triumph of the world’s working class in their epical struggles was observed here today as elsewhere across world with a pledge to establish the rights of the workers.
The May Day, also known as International Workers’ Solidarity Day, commemorates the historic uprising of working people in Chicago, USA, at the height of a prolonged fight for an eight-hour workday.
Faridpur district administration chalked out program with the theme of the day is “Safe working-environment, Bangladesh to Advance.”
In this connection a big rally of workers, members of the public and
officials was brought out in the town which paraded from Janata Bank square to Kabi Jasimuddin hall this morning which was followed by a discussion meeting.
The discussion chaired by ADC (Gen) of Faridpur Md. Abdur Rashid while DC Sardar Sharafat Ali was the chief guest. It was addressed among others by Police Super Md. Jamil Hassan, Sadar upazilla chairman and Awami League leader Khondoker Mohtesham Hossain Babor, Jatiyo Sramik League president Akkas Hossain Mia, Motor Sramik union president Jubair Zakir and labour leaders Moniruzzaman Monir and Abdul Mannan Mana.
Speakers stressed the need for the safety of the labors at their respective working places and reduction of child labors so that they can grow up as healthy citizens of the country.
Speakers also mentioned that the present government of Awami League has contributed a lot for their welfare in enhancing the salary of the labors particularly in the garments sector and also trying to make their workplace more safe than past times.
