Businesses urged to submit VAT returns amid lockdown

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) urged the businesses to comply with the existing provision of the VAT law by submitting VAT returns on the 15th of every month.
In an office order on Thursday, the VAT member (implementation and IT wing) Abdul Mannan Shikder made the request to cooperate with the VAT authority by submitting returns during the Covid-19 induced lockdown.
“All the customs, excise and VAT commissionerate
offices across the country remain open in the lockdown period to help the businesses submit their VAT returns in time,” the order said.
As per Value Added Tax (VAT) and Supplementary Duty Act-2012, section 64 and VAT and SD Rule-2016, rules 47, every VAT registered businesses are bound to submit their respective VAT returns by 15th of every month.
VAT authority is empowered to impose penalty and interest in case of non-compliance of the rules.
However, the businesses will have to follow health safety guidelines at the time of submission of their VAT returns in their respective VAT offices.
VAT member Abdul Mannan also instructed the field-level commissioners to ensure the Covid-19 safety measures for the officials and staff at the time of receiving VAT returns.
Every commissioner will supervise the matter, he said in the order.
