The farmers are expecting bumper production of wheat this season as harvest of the crop has been nearing completion with excellent yield in five districts under Rangpur agriculture region.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have harvested the wheat from 23,205 hectares (87 percent) land, where total cultivated land area was 26,673 hectares in the region.
The farmers produced 83,862 tonnes of wheat in the region during the current Rabi season. Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam said wheat farming target marked a negligible shortfall following cultivation of potato on more land as the farmers got excellent production and price of potato last season.
“However, the wheat production target would be achieved as the farmers cultivated the high yielding, disease resistant and stress tolerant wheat varieties on more land” he added. “The wheat harvest would be completed by next week,” he said
Extension Agronomist Anarul Haque at Dinajpur Hub of International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center also predicted bumper wheat output following use of high yielding variety seeds and conservation agriculture (CA)based technologies.
He said the farmers mostly cultivated high yielding wheat varieties ‘Bijoy’, ‘Pradip’, ‘Sotabdhi’, BARI Gom25, BARI Gom26, BARI Gom27, BARI Gom28 and BARI Gom29 this time to get yield rates between 3.07 and 3.64 tonnes per hectare or even more.
“The less irrigation wheat farming has already become popular among the farmers. They achieved repeated bumper production with lucrative price in recent years,” Anarul added.
Talking to BSS, farmers Esahak Ali, Aiyub Hossain and Subal Das here said they already completed harvest of high yielding BARI Gom26, BARI Gom28, ‘Pradip’ and ‘Sotabdhi’ wheat varieties and got yield rates between 3.26 and 3.70 tonnes per hectare.

expressed satisfaction over excellent yield rate of wheat and predicted bumper production of the cereal crop this season in the region.
Poultry sector cuts poverty, meets nutrition
Experts said the growing poultry sector has been largely contributing in poverty alleviation and meeting nutritional demand of the population side by side bringing self-reliance to the rural people.
They put importance on providing training, technology and assistance to the poultry bird farm owners and common people for accelerating growth of the prospective sector to strengthen national economy.
The opinion came at the daylong workshop on ‘Problems in the Poultry Sector and Way-out’ organised by Rangpur Poultry Industry Owners’ Association (RPIOA) at conference room of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) in the city on Sunday.
Rangpur Divisional Deputy Director of the DLS Agriculturist Mahbubur Rahman attended the workshop as the chief guest with President of RPIOA Akbar Hossain in the chair.
