The sugarcane farmers of Hossainpur in Kishoreganj are happy as they have inclined to cultivate sugarcane day by day as it is more profitable at low cost. Sugarcane cultivation has become popular as there is an opportunity to produce other vegetable crops along with sugarcane cultivation. Some of them run the households of the farmers in the wholesale market or some of them sell it at retail. A large size sugarcane is being sold at Tk 70-80 and a medium size sugarcane is being sold at Tk 30-40.
Rows and rows of red-green eye-catching sugarcane fields can be seen in different areas of the upazila. This time due to unfavorable weather and disease, the bumper crop of sugarcane is swaying in the wind.
According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, in the financial year 2020-21, various varieties of sugarcane including mixed grains, rotten grains, Ishwardi-28 and Bombay have been cultivated in one hectare of land in the upazila. It is learned that area of sugarcane cultivation will increase if the Department of Agriculture provides advice and encouragement with various incentives.
Rafiqul Islam Khan (28), a sugarcane farmer from Garmachua Village of the upazila. Last time there was a loss but this year there are bumper productions of sugarcane. This time, about Tk 4,000 has been spent on sugarcane cultivation on 14 acres of land. Since sugarcane cultivation is profitable, he has been cultivating different varieties of sweet sugarcane for around 7 years.
He said that other vegetables can be sown along with sugarcane cultivation. As a result, all the expenses incurred in sugarcane cultivation are raised by selling the copies woven inside the sugarcane banana, barrier copies and sweet pumpkins. Today he is self-sufficient by solving the financial problems of the family with the additional income from the sale of sugarcane. However, with the advice and cooperation of the Department of Agricultural Extension, this sugarcane cultivation will increase in the upazila, he said.
Hanif, another farmer from Dahra Village in the upazila, said the sugarcane yield was better this time than other years. This time we will see the face of profit by cultivating sugarcane. He also said that he will be able to run the family well by meeting the financial needs of the family.
Upazila Agriculture Officer, agriculturist Md. Imrul Kayes told that sugarcane is very profitable and this time the yield has been very good. Understanding the weather, there is no such thing as a complex disease except red rot and moderate insect disease. However, he said that the Upazila Agriculture Office has been providing advice and assistance to the farmers in cultivating sugarcane.
