Rangpur region is likely to get bumper rice production this year, thanks to favourable weather conditions and increase in acreage for the major crop, according to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE).
“We are expecting a bumper crop of Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) rice this season as farmers exceeded their targeted acreage amid favouralbe climate,” DEA horticulture specialist Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam told BSS today.
He said farmers in this region set a target at 5.21 lakh hectares for Aman crop, but they grew the rice in 5.85 lakh hectares of land, which was higher by 64,039 hectares or 12.28 percent.
“The farmers have already started harvesting the short duration and drought-tolerant T-Aman rice variety including BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan56 and 57 and BINA dhan7,” Mesbahul said.
According to the DAE, the government has fixed a target of producing over 14 lakh tonnes Aman rice from 5.21 lakh hectares of land in all five districts under the Rangpur agriculture region.
Under the programme, 25,432 hectares of land were to be brought under cultivation of hybrid variety T-Aman to produce 83,927 tonnes rice, over 4.65 lakh hectares under high yielding variety to produce 12.46 lakh tonnes rice and 30,762 hectares under local variety to produce 51,372 tonnes Aman rice.
The farmers, however, finally brought 29,689 hectares of land under cultivation of hybrid variety, over 5.24 lakh hectares of high yielding variety and 31,313 hectares of local variety.
Farmers Echhahaq Ali, Aiyub Hossain and others of Kathihara village under Mominpur union in Sadar upazila of Rangpur said they were expecting to start harvesting their T-Aman crop from the first week of November.
Talking to BSS, Regional Additional Director of the DAE Shah Alam said the T-Aman plants grew well amid favourable climatic condition while there was no major incident of pests’ attacks.
Lions October Service Week ends
The October Service Week- 2016 of Lions Club Rangpur (LCR) ended through providing free health services, medicines and enlisting cataract patients at a camp held on Haridebpur union parisahd premises here on Friday.
Earlier on October 1 last, Mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu formally launched the October Service Week-2016 at a ceremony held on Rangpur Lions School and College ground in the city as the chief guest. The LCR, District 351A2, observed the October Service Week-2016 with elaborate programmes and provided various services to the poor, distressed and physically challenged people at different places in the district.
The cost-free services included distribution of saplings among the students, treatments and distribution of medicines, treatments to the eye and dentistry related patients, blood donation, blood grouping and diabetic tests, distribution of sports goods, educational inputs and improved foods among disabled and autistics children and anti-terrorism rally.
On the concluding day, Sadar upazila Chairman Nasima Zaman Boby attended the free medical and eye camp followed by a discussion arranged at Haridebpur union parisahd premises as the chief guest.
With First Vice-president of LCR Lion Al Helal in the chair, its Adviser and noted eye specialist Professor Dr Nazmul Islam attended the event as the special guest.
Chairman of the Week Observance Committee of LCR Lion Alhaj Enamul Haque Sohel, its Co-chairman Lion Hassan Mahbub Akhter Lotan, Adviser Advocate Nurul Akhter, Lion Shariful Islam, Lion Nasrine Haque Boby, also spoke.
Talking to BSS today, Enamul Haque Sohel said that LCR with assistance of the Lions International provided various cost-free services to the poor, distressed and physically challenged people under the weeklong programme in the district.
