Campus Report :
A 6 daylong training was held in the EEE Dept, BUET starting from 24 of the last month. The training was organized by the EEE Dept as a part of knowledge transfer to the engineers of PGCB (Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd i.e. the national grid operator) after successful completion of a consultancy work “Comprehensive Study on Bangladesh Power System (BPS) to formulate an Appropriate Frequency Setting”.
Twelve engineers (ranking from Assistant Engineers to Superintending Engineers) from Planning, Operation, System Protection, and Research, Training Services (RTS) wings of PGCB participated in this training.
Following the unfortunate blackout of 1 November 2014 in Bangladesh, PGCB engaged EEE Dept, BUET in September 2015 as a consultant to study Bangladesh Power system. The study took almost a year.
The main objective of the study was to evolve a method to determine the appropriate locations and settings and do fine tunings for generators’ controllers, system under frequency relays and rate of change of frequency relays, and to implement an islanding scheme in real time when needed so that stability in BPS can be maintained and blackout can be avoided or its effect reduced.
Similar study was also conducted by the EEE Dept, BUET in the year 2009 at the request of PGCB following two blackouts in the year 2007.
Certificates were distributed among the participants on Thursday by Prof Dr Saiful Islam, Vice Chancellor of BUET as the chief guest. He in a brief speech pointed out that over the last 7 years Bangladesh power system has evolved to a size almost double than before with added complexities.
This necessitated a revision of the settings of frequency control relays, which trigger auto load shed in case a large-scale disturbance occurs in the system.
He also thanked the members, in the EEE Department team formed for the study, for effective transfer of the know how to PGCB engineers so that they themselves can perform a similar study in future on their own which was the main motivation for PGCB to take expert services from BUET instead of foreign consultants.
He extended further thanks to the teachers in the EEE Dept as well as other Depts. for their continued efforts to take BUET to a newer height in all possible ways viz. teaching, research and consultancy in the strategic projects of national interest.
The session was also addressed by Chowdhury Alamgir Hossain, Executive Director (P&D) of PGCB, Sheikh Zakiruzzaman, Superintending Engineer (System Protection and Metering Circle) of PGCB, Prof Dr S Shahnawaz Ahmed, one of the resource persons in the EEE Dept consultancy team and Prof Dr Quazi Deen Mohd Khosru, Head, EEE Dept., BUET who presided over the session.
The session was also attended by Executive Directors, Chief Engineers and other senior engineers from PGCB, and other resource persons and faculties from EEE Dept, BUET.
