Leaders of Bangladesh-Thai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BTCCI) Wednesday demanded of the government to set up a separate export processing zone (EPZ) for the entrepreneurs from Thailand.
Thai investments in Bangladesh will increase many times, if a separate EPZ is set up, they said in a meeting with Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu at the ministry.
Industries Ministry Additional Secretary M Farhad Uddin, BTCCI President Sajjatuz Jumma and Directors M. Shahjahan Khan, Abu Rushd Tareque, Zafar Osman, Asif Ibrahim, Selim Solaiman, Montchai Musicabud and Monir Hossain were present at the meeting, said an official release.
The BTCCI leaders said the Thai entrepreneurs are keen to invest in manufacturing fruit cans, potato chips, and fuel oil from abandoned tyres.
They are also eager to relocate industries to Bangladesh from Thailand where the cost of labour has increased, they added.
The industries minister welcomed investment proposals from Thailand and said the government would extend all types of cooperation in setting up agro-based industries.
He urged the Thai entrepreneurs to come up with joint-venture investment proposals.
Amir Hossain Amu stressed the need for establishing trade balance between the two countries.
