Mosquito bit has made people’s lives miserable in both north and south. It is due to the two Dhaka City Corporation (DCC)’s indifference the mosquito breeding has increased this season.
Sources said that perhaps the officials of the city corporation thought that the heavy rainfall will wash out the mosquito breeding centres like drains, stagnant waters, derelict water bodies and unclean waters, but that did not happen this year.
The Dhaka city experienced light shower to medium shower till date for which the breeding centres remained intact. A resident named Humayun Kabir from Tekergoli, Gendaria said, no city corporation initiative has been seen by the residents of this area to destroy mosquito breeding centres.

City residents said, they are suffering from mosquito bit at Sehri, Iftar and Tarawih times. Since Tarawih salat takes a long time, the devotees bear the sting most.
Residents said, stagnant waters, marshy, derelict water bodies and unclean water in open drains provided ground for mosquito breeding in the capital.
They said that the city corporations took no initiative to curb mosquito breeding.
Mirhazirbagh resident Soheli Sabreen said, her children suffer with mosquito bit seriously. She said three of her school children cannot study without mosquito coil or spray even at daytime.
Azimpur colony resident Abid Shahriar has same experience. He said, his children need mosquito net at daytime even. ” If my minor boy sleeps at daytime, he needs a mosquito net,” he said. Kolabagan’s Taseen Ahmed said, “It is really sad.”
An official of Dhaka south city corporation said preferring anonymity, some dishonest officials use to sell the city corporation provided mosquito killing materials in the open market and wait for heavy rain. They think that torrential rains will demolish the mosquito hubs, which will relieve them of the responsibility. But there is no sign thereof.
Sources said, Dhaka South City Corporation’s mosquito killing budget amounted to Tk 12.50 crore for the 2015-16 fiscal year. On the other hand, the Dhaka North City Corporation allocated Tk 14 crore for the same purpose.
When asked Chief Health Officer of DSCC Brigadier General Dr. Saidur Rahman told The New Nation, ” We could not operate foggy machine due to petrol shortage. Still we are working to demolish the hubs.”
He also said, the City Corporation has already sent letters to Housing Societies to take proper steps in their housing areas to destroy mosquito breeding hubs.
