A boat with more than 90 migrants on board capsized off the coast of Tunisia in the Mediterranean on its way from Libya to Europe. Of them, 50 have been rescued alive including 33 Bangladeshis.
Tunisia’s defense ministry says more than 50 migrants were missing as their ship sank off the Tunisia coast after leaving Libya.
Mohamed Zikri, a defence ministry spokesperson, said 33 survivors of the shipwreck were picked up after clinging to an oil platform off the southern coast of Tunisia.
“There are 33 survivors, all apparently from Bangladesh,” Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), told AFP. “At least 50 are missing. Their nationalities could not be known”.
A boat carrying more than 90 passengers left the Libyan port for Europe on Sunday. After the boat sank Tunisian coasts guards rescued about 50 migrants and returned with survivors to the port of Georges, about 100 kilometers northwest from the spot where the boat capsize.
At least 1,200 migrants have died in the Mediterranean sea, according to UN figures last year.
According to the IOM, more than 500 people have died while crossing the Mediterranean from the coast of North Africa to Italy and Malta since the beginning of 2021.
