The BNP’s relief convoy headed to refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar was barred by police for neglecting rules, says Obaidul Quader.
The Awami League government’s Road Transport minister claimed the BNP was going to the camps for publicity, not because of humanity. “There are certain rules. Everyone has been providing relief through the committee headed by Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner.
If the BNP had given the relief to the committee, it could have reached the refugees sooner than its politicians,”
Quader was speaking to reporters after a sub-committee meeting for disaster and relief at the Awami League chief’s office in Dhanmondi. “There are hundreds of thousands of people there who are desperate for food. We will have to do the challenging tasks of providing sanitation and shelter. We never thought we’d have to do this alone. Why would we bar BNP? They were trying to take their politics there. Otherwise why did not they follow the rules?” “BNP does not want to help. They are only there for the photo opportunity.”
Around 400,000 Rohingyas fleeing a violent army crackdown in neighbouring Myanmar have taken shelter in Bangladesh in the last three weeks. On Wednesday, law enforcers stopped BNP leaders from going to Ukhia in Cox’s Bazar with 20 trucks of relief. “If someone takes relief to a place where there are thousands of hungry people, without any respect for guidelines, is bound to create trouble for himself,” Quader said.
“BNP leaders took a truck there. They did not even bother about security,” added Quader.
The sub-committee on disaster and relief will distribute 20,000 blankets among the Rohingya refugees in winter, as per decision taken at the meeting, he added.
