Impeachment law: BNP’s rally at JPC today

UNB, Dhaka :BNP’s Dhaka city unit will hold its scheduled rally protesting the move to re-empower parliament to impeach judges in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Wednesday.Besides, the 20-party alliance will form a human chain programme at the same venue on Saturday as part of its countrywide programme marking the ‘International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearance’.Dhaka city unit BNP convener Mirza Abbas said this at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office after an emergency meeting of the unit on Tuesday.Earlier on Monday, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced that the BNP-led 20-party alliance will hold protest processions and rallies at 15 points of the capital on Wednesday protesting the government decision of re-empowering parliament to remove Supreme Court judges.The cabinet on August 18 approved the proposal for amendment to the constitution for empowering parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges for misconduct or incapacity.Abbas said, they have decided to hold the rally at a place in front of the Press Club instead of 15 spots of the city as police did not permit them to do so.He said, they have also decided to hold a discussion at the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh on August 31, marking the party’s founding anniversary. Besides, the party will pay homage to party founder Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave on September 1 on the occasion.Replying to a question, Abbas said the government has placed chargesheets against BNP leaders and activist in a ‘conspiratorial and false’ case. “It’s an unusual process for politics, although it’s the usual attitude of Awami fascist regime.”On Monday, a court here framed charges against 147 leaders and activists of BNP and its alliance, including BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and publicity secretary Zainal Abdin Farroque, in a case filed for unleashing violence from an anti-government rally in 2013.
