The BNP plans to repair the central committee and to reorganise the structures of its all-associate bodies in order to start new phase of movement, demanding fresh national polls, party sources said.
“After the party’s central executive committee was formed, party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has directed senior leaders to reorganise he BNP’s all district and upazila committees,” said BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy to The New Nation.
Sources said, Begum Khaleda Zia has ordered the party’s Vice-Chairman Mohammad Shahjahan to start the party’s reorganising process from grassroots levels.
When contacted, Shahjahan said, “The party reorganisation is a continuous process. The BNP is a big party. There are lots of leaders in the party at every stage-central to grassroots level. So, it will take time to reorganise the party from the grassroots levels to central committees.”
He said, the wards and the union committees of most of the districts had been completed before the party’s sixth national council held on the 19th March this year.
Party leaders said, the high command is now trying to form its centrally subject-wise sub-committees, including Agriculture Affairs sub-committee, Economic Affairs sub-committee and Foreign Affairs sub-committee.
One of the senior leaders said, BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia will go to London after return from Saudi Arabia where she had gone to perform Hajj with family members.
“She will stay for some days in London with Tarique Rahman to discuss about the party’s central sub-committees, district committees and associate bodies’ committees,” said a standing committee member preferring anonymity.
Insiders also said, Khaleda Zia has prepared lists of probable leaders for those committees. Besides, Tarique Rahman also has also drafted lists with the help of his close leaders staying in London and Dhaka.
“The party chairperson is trying to avoid unrest at all levels and to maintain close touch with Tarique Rahman in forming BNP committees,” said a senior leader.
BNP sources said, the party high-ups sent letters to district leaders on August 9 in 2015 to complete all units committees through councils by September 30 of the year. But the designated central leaders failed to follow the directions within the scheduled time. In these circumstances, the party stopped the grassroots reorganising process to hold the party’s sixth national council.
BNP grassroots leaders expressed their frustration at the reorganising process. Some of the district leaders said, the center frequently start and stop grassroots reorganising process. It harms the grassroots leaders and activists enthusiasms.
Some of the district leaders said, the designated central leaders try to form pocket committees with their nearest leaders sitting in Dhaka. Such activities would not help the party to be strong at grassroots level. “All committees should be formed by holding councils,” they insisted.
